The largest city in the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia, Kuantan is where you will land if you travel by plane to Cherating. This capital city of Pahang with a population of over 420,000 people is said to have been around since the 1850s and what originally known as Kampung Teruntum. Kuantan’s main economic activities are related to tourism; it is famed for the production of local fabric known as batik, salted fish, and handicrafts. However, this region is also home to a boisterous petrochemical industry as well as timber and fishing industries.
If you are driving from Kuala Lumpur, Kuantan is located about 236 kilometres away and you can probably get there within three hours if there is no traffic. You can also fly in and land at Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Airport, or for a more economical option, take a bus from most major Malaysian cities and Singapore to Terminal Kuantan Sentral, an integrated long-distance bus hub. While Cherating has plenty for you to see and do, you can also take a day or two to explore what Kuantan has to offer if you’d like; there are a number of beaches, waterfalls, parks, theme parks, and malls to visit in the surrounding area.
