Said to be more than 130 million years old, the Taman Negara rainforest was established in 1938. At the time it was named the King George V National Park. Post-independence, it was renamed “Taman Negara”. Spanning more than 4,300 km2, the park lies within three Malaysian states, namely Pahang, Terengganu, and Kelantan. Gunung Tahan, the highest point of the Malay Peninsula, resides within Taman Negara parameters.
Being protected as it is, Taman Negara is home to many rare animal species, including the Malayan Tiger, Asian elephant, Malayan peacock-pheasant, red junglefowl, and more. Avid birdwatchers will also find Taman Negara a delight to visit; you may come across beautiful bird species like the hornbill, pitta, woodpeckers, and other avifauna if you visit certain areas within Taman Negara. Of course, there are also hundreds of species of trees and plants here as well, including trees typically used for timber such as meranti, chengal, and keruing. Don’t worry though, because no commercial logging or deforestation activities are allowed to happen within the confines of Taman Negara.
Club Med Cherating can arrange for an excursion for you to visit Taman Negara during your stay with us. This excursion can only be booked once you arrive at our resort, so feel free to request it from the reception during your check-in process into the hotel, or any time during your stay. During this excursion, you will be transported to Taman Negara, where a day full of adventure awaits you. Expect to engage in exhilarating activities like walking along the canopy walk, jungle-trekking, and whitewater rafting. You will also be brought to visit an aboriginal village, where you can learn about and understand the culture of the natives here who have been living in harmony with the forest for centuries.
If you are a nature lover, there are several nature excursions we offer that you’d love. Two of them are the mangrove river tour as well as the firefly tour. Both take place at the mangrove river, with the first happening in the day and the firefly tour only being available at night. Cruise down Cherating’s well-preserved mangrove river and appreciate the plants and animals around you, most which are quite different from what you’d see at Taman Negara. During the firefly tour, get the rare chance to watch many, many fireflies settle along the banks of Cherating river and flash their lights in unison as a communication signal to one another.
We can also arrange for you to visit the nearby elephant sanctuary, which is also a day-long excursion. Here, many Asian elephants, which are an endangered species, are rehabilitated when caught in human premises around the state, and then released into the wild when ready. Kids and adults alike will enjoy interacting and watching the elephants being fed and bathed. Additionally, Club Med Cherating is located right next to the Cherating Turtle Sanctuary, where a number of excursions are available for you to do things like release turtle hatchlings to the sea and watch mother turtles lay eggs on the beach.
These are just a few of the many excursions you can opt for during your stay at our resort. We are excited to meet you and ensure your comfortable and memorable stay during your time as our guest. See you soon!
